Hazing is prevalent in many countries around the world. In some countries, it has been banned by the law, althoug this ban is not always enforced. In others, it is tolerated or even openly accepted by schools and universities.
Hazing is the word commonly used in the US, in Canada, also in the Philippines, a former US-run country, "ragging" in India and Pakistan, "mexoneo" in Chile, "praxe" in Portugal, "nollning" in Sweden, "ontgroening" in The Netherlands and in Suriname, a former Dutch colony in South America, "doop" and "baptême" in Belgium, "bizutage" in France and some former French-run countries, like Morocco etc.
These so-called "initiation rites" are common not only in universities, but also more and more frequently in secondary schools, where it is sometimes difficult to make a distinction between hazing and bullying.
Hazing is sometimes a very serious problem in the military, especially in Russia, where hundreds of conscripts die every year, many commit suicide. But it also occurs in other Armed Forces, even in countries which have made it illegal.
